Why the Philippines?

Good Day, Reachers!

One of the most common questions I get asked is,

“Why go all the way to the Philippines to fight human trafficking when it happens right here in the US?”

To begin, I want to agree with the truth that the United States is not immune from the slavery of human trafficking. Just a couple of weeks ago a story broke in Tennessee where 18 men, including military and clergy members, were indicted for participating in an underage sex trafficking ring.

Honestly, it seems like only a few years ago that reading about something like this was only possible in international news and dealing with countries like the Philippines, Thailand, Cambodia, and China. But here we are, dealing with modern slavery in our own backyard. 

It is horrific.

With this in mind, the question as to why we will serve in the Philippines becomes all the more poignant.

Reason #1

To begin, my wife Hanel and I have been called to serve the Philippines and we have decided to be radically obedient in our calling. Pretty simple.

Reason #2

Second, while there will always be more need than help, the US and local governments have created sex trafficking task forces working to find and free as many as they can. 

And while the Philippines has a task force, the statistics show they are completely ineffective in handling this growing problem. 

Further, with the “bar girl” scenario I have told you all about, the government has no authority to do anything as no laws are being broken.

Reason #3

Finally, the children rescued in Tennessee have a safe place to provide for their needs and are hopeful to be reconnected with their families. 

To be clear, I am not suggesting this system is in any way perfect, but it is functional and far better than remaining in the situation where they were found. 

The Philippines, on the other hand, has no programs to care for those rescued, and many are not able return to their families. 

They Need Us!

We need to fight tooth and nail for the freedom of all who are trafficked around the world. 

The Philippines is sacrificing over 800 thousand of its youth to satisfy the demands of sex trafficking. 

REACH PH will stand with the few to rescue all who are willing.
